St. Stephens Lutheran School participates in the Western Piedmont Athletic Association. The WPAA is an association of schools, both Christian and charter schools, of approximately the same size. The schools are from Hickory, Statesville, Cornelius, Huntersville, Lincolnton, and the Charlotte area. Schools play each other with the season finale including a tournament and an all-star game. The WPAA offers competition in all of the following sports.
Fall Sports:
1. Coed Soccer - Soccer for students in grades 6 - 8. Home games are played on our own Greenfield.
2. Coed Cross Country - The cross country team has a two mile course set out. The team is open for students in grades 5 - 8.
3. Volleyball – The volleyball team is open for girls in grades 6 - 8. Home games are played in our gym.
Winter Sports:
1. JV Cheerleading - JV cheerleading is open for girls in grades 5 - 6. They cheer at all girls and boys basketball games.
2. Varsity Cheerleading - Varsity cheerleading is open to girls in grades
7-8. They cheer at girls and boys basketball games as well as lead pep rallies.
3. JV Basketball - The 5-6 grades have both a girls and boys team. They
compete in league ballgames.
4. Varsity Basketball - the 7th and 8lth grade girls and boys teams participate in
league competition as well as selected tournaments. The participate in a
season ending tournament with teams from New Orleans, Huntsville, and
Knoxville.
Springs Sports:
1. Tennis - Teams are fielded for both boys and girls in grades 5 - 8.
2. Coed Golf - The golf team is open to students in grades 5 - 8.
3. Softball - The girls softball team plays fast pitch and is open to girls in grades
6 - 8.
4. Baseball - The boys baseball team is open to students in grades 6 - 8.
St. Stephens also has an intramural basketball program for students in grades 1 - 4 which runs in the months of January and February.
A year ending sports event honors the athletes and coaches for their participation in the athletic program. Special honors include the selection of the Athlete Scholar Award, presented to the top academic athlete who participated in at least two sports in the seventh and eighth grades. The second award is the Sportsmanship Award presented the boy and girl who exemplifies sportsmanship while participating in at least two sports in their seventh and eighth grades.
The athletic program here at St. Stephens is financed by the Athletic Booster Club. The club finances all of the teams including uniforms, equipment, travel, and referee fees. Financing is accomplished through the admission charges at ball games, concessions, sale of sweat shirts and caps, and advertising for local businesses.
